Wrote c. A.D. 383
Helvidius
Worth knowing
- A Roman layman who wrote around A.D. 383 that Mary had other children after Jesus, and that marriage is as honourable as virginity.
- He read the Gospels' mention of Jesus' brothers, and Matthew's "until she had brought forth her son", in their plain sense.
- His tract is lost. Jerome's reply, Against Helvidius, argued that the "brothers" were cousins, and that view prevailed in the Western church.
