Eunomius of Cyzicus

Worth knowing

  • Bishop of Cyzicus for a short time around 360, and leader of the Anomoeans, who taught that the Son is unlike the Father in essence.
  • He claimed that God's essence is exactly defined by the word "unbegotten", so the begotten Son cannot share it.
  • Basil and Gregory of Nyssa answered him: human words can name God truly without defining everything God is.

In Scholar’s Dream, Eunomius of Cyzicus has one book

In Scholar’s Dream, books argue with each other, and each thing a book can do in a debate is called a move. Every quote below is spoken by one of those moves. Open “How it works in the game” under a quote to see the move, which books learn it, and which arguments it answers best.

“God knows no more of his own substance than we do… whatever we know about the Divine substance, that precisely is known to God… whatever he knows, the same also you will find without any difference in us.”

Eunomius, as recorded by Socrates Scholasticus, Ecclesiastical History 4.7 (trans. A. C. Zenos, NPNF2 vol. 2, public domain).public domain
