The seventh letter is the one that makes the collection what it is. Writing AHEAD of himself to the Christians at Rome, Ignatius begs them not to use their influence to get him spared — he wants the beasts, and says so at a length that has troubled readers ever since. Whatever is made of that, it is the earliest surviving Christian letter that is not in the New Testament and is not addressed to a problem: it is addressed to his own death.
