Athanasius became bishop of Alexandria at about thirty and spent seventeen of his forty-five years as bishop in exile — five times, under four emperors, twice living in the desert with the monks. The phrase they remember him by, Athanasius against the world, is not his own and is roughly accurate: at the low point of the Arian controversy the imperial court, most of the eastern bishops and a pope’s signature were on the other side. He did not change the sentence he was arguing.
