Bishop Bernard the Spaniard went to Wollin barefoot and in rags, and was told to go and preach to the fish. He came back and told Otto of Bamberg exactly why: these people judge a messenger by what he is wearing. Otto went with twenty clergy, sixty men, four-horse carriages and a rule that he would give away more than he was given — so that nobody could say he had come for the money.
