Why these numbers

The game's own explanation, as a reader sees it in the backpack.

Stamina 86

The whole correspondence survives, both directions, and it is how the affair is known at all. Very little of this man has been lost.

Contend 70

He is not trying to win. Every letter is aimed at stopping something rather than defeating someone, which is a different and weaker kind of blow.

Defend 94

Almost impossible to dislodge. He grants the other side its complaints, agrees where he can, and still will not move off unity.

Popularity 56

Antioch is a long way from either capital, and every letter took weeks. He was answering a fire by post.

Cited for this book

The third patriarch, standing between the other two, and the only man in the affair who spent it trying to prevent rather than to win. He did not like Latins and said so plainly. He begged Cerularius not to break the church, was ignored, and struck the pope’s name from his own diptychs when he was told to. Fortescue, a Latin partisan with no reason to flatter him, wrote that there are very few people in this history for whom one feels so much sympathy.

Moves learned

By levelling up. A book that develops keeps what it knew and learns the rest on its new schedule.
