Claudius Ptolemy

Worth knowing

  • Worked at Alexandria. The Almagest set out an earth-centred model of the heavens with enough mathematics behind it to predict where the planets would actually be.
  • It was the standard astronomical work in Greek, Arabic and Latin for roughly fourteen hundred years.
  • Being wrong at the centre did not stop it being right about most of the sky, which is a useful thing to sit with.
