John
the Evangelist
Worth knowing
- The Gospel of John, the fourth and latest of the four, opens not with a birth but with a beginning: "In the beginning was the Word."
- Rylands P52 is a scrap of John 18 the size of a credit card, with Pilate's question on one side and his exit on the other. It is generally dated to the first half of the second century.
- That scrap is the earliest known fragment of any New Testament manuscript, which is why it matters out of all proportion to its size.
