Eusebius
of Caesarea
Worth knowing
- Bishop of Caesarea, and the reason we know anything at all about a great many earlier Christians.
- His Ecclesiastical History quotes its sources at length. Quadratus, Papias and others survive only as passages inside it — when the original was lost, Eusebius's copy was what remained.
- He was at the Council of Nicaea in 325, and lived through the whole turn from persecution to imperial favour.
